Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) is a dynamically developing multidisciplinary scientific institution. IMBB is a part of Faculty of Biology of the Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU), one of the biggest universities in Poland. IMBB is located in Collegium Biologicum in the new AMU campus Morasko.
IMBB consists of five departments and two independent laboratories:
- Department of Biochemistry
- Department of Biotechnology
- Department of Bioenergetics
- Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology
- Department of Gene Expression
- Laboratory of Bioinformatics
- Laboratory of Human Molecular Genetics
Four of five departments of IMBB, i.e. Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Gene Expression, and Molecular & Cellular Biology, are oriented towards the studies of plant biology at cellular, molecular and biochemical levels, and translating the results of basic research to plant biotechnology. The research within the second major topic of IMBB: molecular and genetic determinants of human diseases, is the main goal of the Laboratory of Human Molecular Genetics. This laboratory closely collaborates with physicians and hospitals. The third research theme, carried out by the Department of Bioenergetics, is centered on investigation of mitochondria function in various animal, fungi and plant model systems. The Laboratory of Bioinformatics combines analysis of DNA, RNA and proteins, as well as advanced computational modeling of gene expression networks, creating a platform for scientific collaboration of all IMBB research groups.
